Common Kitchen Spices To Push Back Diabetes - Part 1

Awareness of a disease among general public is the first step towards eradication of the disease. Many deadly diseases like Polio has almost got extinct due to massive “2 drops of life” awareness campaigns which are still a hit in villages. Due to general public’s involvement people have started taking precaution to eradicate Polio.

If you are active on social media you definitely would have seen viral videos of people pouring bucket full of ice water on their head nominating their friends to do the same and donating for the cause of a disease called ALS. All over the world the campaign has generated awareness on this progressive neurodegenerative disease called ALS through the #IceBucketChallenge.

Famous celebrities from world over like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Stephen Hawkings and back home our Bollywood celebrities like Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Bipasha Basu, Sonakshi Sinha, Siddharth Malhotra and many more have participated in ALS Challenge. The success of this campaign is so phenomenal that people till now who never even have heard about the disease are now searching for the problem and if possible how to get immunized of it. Although, in the case of ALS since there is no treatment itself available, the Ice Bucket Challenge campaign is helping to generate money which will be utilized for research and development to cure ALS.

The Point is: Awareness is first step for cure

Though we had earlier written about many good and bad foods for diabetes in our blog, we thought it will be worthwhile to talk specifically about a few common kitchen spices too.

You can refer to this treatment as alternative treatment but scientifically also it is proven that there are many natural food substances and ways like yoga or exercises which helps a person to control the excess fat in body thereby controlling his/her blood sugar levels.

Let’s begin to know the common spices which can help to control diabetes

CINNAMON - Yes, Cinnamon!

A great flavoring material, mostly available in Indian kitchen shelf’s which we would have sprinkled in so many curries and different Biriyani or Pulao items. Who would have thought that it has tremendous medicinal opportunities stored within?

How Cinnamon aids medically?

Cinnamon contains a flavonoid that closely mimics insulin activity—called “methyl hydroxyl chalcone polymer” (or MHCP). Research has shown that a combination of MHCP and insulin work together to regulate glucose metabolism. Researchers also noted that MHCP mimics insulin and, in most cases, can work alone.

Taking half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day can help lower your blood sugar and reduce your risks for dangerous diabetic complications. Or more easily, you may just sprinkle this delicious spice into hot or cold cereal, curd, and even coffee or tea once a day.

Though, we should be aware of the fact that Cinnamon contains some toxic materials which if taken in high levels, could cause problems, at the same time the best thing of these toxic material is that they are fat soluble. So, all you have to do is boil the cinnamon in water and the resulting watery solution can be used. Pour over the solution through a clean cotton cloth and you will get the MHCP which since is water-soluble, is still in the watery solution. The solid cinnamon residue can be thrown away. Just to be on safe side, if you’re taking insulin or another medication for diabetes and want to try cinnamon, just be sure to discuss it with your medical practitioner who can assist you in safely reducing down your medication.

There are many other kitchen spices which will help you in fighting diabetes, like:
